Barbara Hepworth’s Life

2 hour artist-led workshop for KS1 – KS4
(available Wed - Fri this academy year)

Working solely in our galleries, students will discover more about Barbara Hepworth’s life before creating sculptures inspired her artwork.

Session Overview

Spending in-depth time in the galleries pupils will learn about Barbara Hepworth’s life, artwork and her connection with the Yorkshire landscape.

During the workshop pupils will discover Hepworth’s timeline of events, and how these link to her collection of objects and sculptures displayed in the galleries. Using handling objects and vocab words they will develop their understanding of the materials, tools and processes Hepworth used. Exploring how the landscape inspired the forms and textures in Hepworth’s sculptures, pupils will work collaboratively to create large-scale drawings.

Having investigated the inspiration behind Hepworth’s artwork and their titles pupils, will make their own sculptures from card, wire and string. Finally, reflecting on their work, they will create a class exhibition displaying their small 3D artwork in the gallery.

Take back to school

Pupils will each have a series of drawings from the galleries and small collaborative group sculptures. Please bring boxes to transport the work back to school.

The children left feeling like artists which was invaluable and they were inspired to further produce artwork and to learn more about Barbara Hepworth and her work. I couldn’t have asked for more. Year 2 teacher, The Mount Junior Infant and Nursery School

This workshop inspires and challenges pupils to experiment with new materials and create their own works of art. They are encouraged to think critically about the art they experience in the galleries, developing their visual language.

The activities were well thought out, practical, hands on and engaging for all of the children. The knowledge and passion of the artist who delivered the workshop was inspiring too.” Year 2 teacher, The Mount Junior Infant and Nursery School
