Schools & Colleges: Grand Central Rail Project

This summer, The Hepworth Wakefield and Grand Central Rail worked with year 10 Art & Design students from Trinity Academy Sowerby Bridge to learn about architecture and design.

Artist Lucy Courtney-Clegg visited school to deliver a workshop in school, asking students to take inspiration from their schools architecture for their own sculptural models. Students explored drawing outside of the classroom, experimenting with materials and making their own models.

Students then visited The Hepworth Wakefield in July 2018 via train and for many, this was a new experience. While on the train students produced individual proposals for a public art sculptor to be placed at Wakefield Kirkgate Train Station. On arrival students were given exclusive access to Grand Central Rail facilities plus imagined what their sculptors would look like in the specified location.

At the gallery students studied The Hepworth Wakefield’s architecture, designed by award winning architect David Chipperfield. In addition to learning about the design and practicalities of the building, students considered priorities and studied Barbara Hepworth’s art work before making their own sculptures to take away.

The teacher commented ‘It was the first time students had visited the gallery and they really enjoyed the drawing activities on the train.’

A special thank you to Grand Central Rail for supporting this project.
