Ben Rivers (b.1972, Somerset, UK) graduated from Falmouth School of Art in 1993.
Ben Rivers is one of the most notable artist filmmakers working in the UK today. Working across documentary, fantasy and fable, Rivers expresses an interest in people separated from society and marginal worlds. Rivers uses a hand-held 16mm camera, and processes the film himself, controlling every element of its production.
He is the recipient of numerous prizes including: the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize, 68th Venice Film Festival; the Baloise Art Prize, Art/42/Basel 2011 Awards; Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Artists, 2010. Recent projects and exhibitions include: Sackbarrow, Hayward Gallery, London, 2011; On Overgrown Paths, Impressions Gallery, Bradford, 2010; Origin of the Species, Kate McGarry, London, 2009; A World Rattled of Habit, A Foundation, Liverpool; 2009.
‘It’s those ambivalent feelings that I often want to convey: this simultaneous joy and unease.’
